There was a conflict between the Armed Forces of El Salvador (FAES) and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). Military-led government (FAES) wanted to keep the government as it was, but the FMLN was a coalition or umbrella organization of five left-wing militias with socialist ideas that wanted a change in the country so they fought for their rights and for a change.
Most Salvadoreans were campesinos, peasants living at subsistence level without running water or electricity, while a tiny privileged minority live in wealth and opulence that was the government.
Leftist political groups organized huge demonstrations demanding fair elections and improved social conditions. The government fought back violently to maintain power.
