Human Rights in the Civil War #2

In 1976, the régime's token land reform did little to alleviate the economic inequity. The government replied to the consequent political unrest with state-of-siege declarations, the suspension of constitutional rights, and paramilitary death squads. These actions made the population and prompted many in the Catholic Church to denounce the government violence. These was the main trouble that caused the civil war, the people were tired of frauds and that the government didn’t respect them as persons.

75,000 dead the war ended with the Chapultepec Peace Accords (1992) wich restructured the Salvadoran Armed Forces, the National and Treasury Police are dissolved (new civilian-overseen police created) and the  FMLN becomes a political party.

Human Rights in the Civil War

There was a conflict  between  the Armed Forces of El Salvador (FAES) and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN).  Military-led government (FAES) wanted to keep the government as it was, but the FMLN was a coalition or umbrella organization of five left-wing militias with socialist ideas that wanted a change in the country so they fought for their rights and for a change.

Most Salvadoreans were campesinos, peasants living at subsistence level without running water or electricity, while a tiny privileged minority live in wealth and opulence that was the government.

Leftist political groups organized huge demonstrations demanding fair elections and improved social conditions. The government fought back violently to maintain power.
